We are here to help you!

You are one of the nearly 11,000 students enrolled in the University of Maryland's 230 graduate programs with a goal in mind.  Whether you are conducting groundbreaking research, advancing your career, or satisfying your intellectual curiosity, we are here to help you focus on your goals and not be sidetracked when life gets in the way.

Graduate Student Legal Aid is here to prevent and resolve your legal problems and to reduce the associated stress.  Our mission is to advise you of your rights in a culturally competent, compassionate, confidential, and supportive setting to make it easier for you to do what you are here to do, focus on your academic pursuits.

Are you eligible? Is it affordable?

You are eligible if you are current UMD College Park graduate student who pays the student activity fee. Our services are offered at no additional charge thanks to Graduate Student Government that annually allocates a portion of the Graduate Student Fee to fund our office.

If you are a UMD alum, staff member, faculty member, post-doc, or a student at another campus (like Shady Grove or UMGC), you aren't eligible for our services. However, you are welcome to use our Resources directory or email our office for a referral.

How We Help

Ready to Connect?

We make it easy to get the help you need. Legal and advocacy consultations are offered via phone or Zoom, and notary appointments are required to take place in person. Your first step is to complete a request form you'll find on the webpages linked above.

One last thing.  We operate on a part-time schedule and are closed on Fridays. If you contact us outside of office hours, we promise to get back to your emails and voicemails as soon as we are back in the office.
